I love lightning bugs a.k.a. fireflies

June 11, 2010
I think this is such a beautifully breathtaking image.

Friday night we went out to Lake Catherine to visit the Pharr's and the Tucker's who have been camping this week. We had a wonderful dish of fried mustard catfish--yum!

Lightning bugs are in full season, and the woods were filled with their flashes. But I started to wonder: why do fireflies only come out during the summer? I knew they were nocturnal, so that explained their night flights.

Fireflies tend to live for about one year from one mating season to the next, and summer just happens to be their time to mate. Ah, love is in the air! This means that these beetles are born, mature to adulthood, mate, and die. Despite the very practical route their lives take, I still feel they have a fairly long lifecycle for being a bug.

Fireflies' luminescence is used to attract other fireflies to mate or to attract prey, just like a peacock uses its plumage...or the way some of us ladies bat our eyelashes or use Bath and Body Works' raspberry vanilla spray. HA! (That's Zach's favorite. ;)

Margarita Mamas

June 10, 2010After spending the afternoon in Carlisle, we headed to LR to meet up with two of my best friends from high school, Tasha and Yousra while Zach met up with Dan at the Saucer. (That would get him in trouble later.)

When Tasha was pregnant with Briley, she craved margaritas, and, while the rest of us enjoyed free margaritas in Jamaica and Grand Cayman, she was left out because they were premixed. :( So I promised her that I would buy her a margarita when she finally had Briley.

Here we are one Drake and almost three years later, and we finally had that margarita night at On the Border. Since I broke up with Jose Cuervo a long, long, LONG time ago, I settled on a mojito. Of course, I didn't realize that it was a Mexican mojito--that is, it had tequila, instead of rum. No me gusta. :(

So I handed that over to Tashie and enjoyed a Dos Equis Amber instead. :) We enjoyed catching up and girl talk and some Mexican food!

Then we decided to head over to Khalil's because Yousra is the daddy's daughter. *hahaha* Khalil's is FANTASTIC! It is very chill with nice lighting and furniture, lots of beer (over 80 different bottled beers, I believe) and yummy food. After Dan left, I went and picked up Zach so he could see for himself.

I can't wait to go back. (And you should go, too! :)

Thank you, ladies for a lovely night! We should definitely do it more often. :) Twink, we are going to the Saucer for some cheese fries! And Tashie, we love our gifts! Love y'all!

Here are some pictures of our night:

My Twink and My Tashie

Yousra had wanted to do a serious photo the picture before. Lord, I hope this is not the face I gave my professors... And I guess Tasha had a boogie?

This basically summarizes our friendship.

When we finally decided we were done taking silly photos, Tasha declared that she was glad because she was sitting on the bar and it hurt her bum!
Zach got in trouble with our crazy waitress Diane for having been at the Saucer instead. When he asked for water, she brought him this paper cup!
Sometimes my shutter doesn't open, but the pictures still turn out a-okay.

Tasha decided to try on the costumes from Khalil's float in the St. Patrick's Day parade. Thankfully we got her to stop after one, or we would have been there until four in the morning!

"Monica, We knee-d you to get well soon!"

June 9, 2010

Justify FullWednesday I made Monica a get well present: a devil's food cake (with chocolate fudge pudding baked in) and homemade cream cheese icing! I made the icing delphinium blue and piped a border around the top and bottom of the cake and added daisies (the only thing I can make so far!). Daisies worked because 1) Monica is a hippie, and 2) they are her favorite flower (which I didn't know).
But I was also very punny: "Monica, we knee-d you to get well soon!" (Yep. I'm a riot.)

A few weeks ago when I started working on Erin and Nathan's birthday cakes, I just knew I had to make one after Monica's surgery since cake is her world. : )

Thursday we made it out to see her, Nan, Judy, and Jeff's dad Peter in Carlisle. We had a nice visit and enjoyed our cake thoroughly. : ) I only wish we could have stayed longer. : (

Monica, I am so proud of you and I have a great feeling about your recovery. Keep up the good work! AND I hope your present brings you tastiness through at least the weekend! (I know cake won't last long around you. :)

L-O-N-G Weekend in Oxford, or Yoknapatawpha County

June 4-8, 2010

I got bored with my "Mint to Be" mints in Memphis traffic.

We left out Friday afternoon (June 4) for Oxford, Mississippi, to visit Kevin and Bree. It wasn't that long of a trip, except when we hit rush-hour traffic outside of Memphis and puttered along for awhile.
Oxford is definitely not what I expected. :) Mississippi is a scary place. :( But we met lots of their friends and gorged ourselves on grilled steaks, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, homemade strawberry ice cream, beer, and cheap wine. It was a great dinner and a great first night in Oxford!
Lafayette County Courthouse

Saturday we woke up late, ate lunch, and headed to the Oxford Square, where I imagined it from the last page of Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury.
There, we explored Square Books (with its "Faulkner" section), shared a sundae at Holli's Sweet Tooth, tried pecan beer at The Blind Pig, drifted through Lily Pad, and loaded up on booze to head to Taylor Grocery.
Wow.
We drove out past Oxford into the boonies, getting lost and turning around at a possibly crazed man's house...all the while learning how to pronounce Lafayette (as in, Lafayette County).

Taylor Grocery was even more intriguing. According to one website, it is "the place to see and be seen." First of all, a "grocery" refers to a restaurant, the term seeming to originate from general stores and grocery stores that served meals on the side. As these businesses transitioned to full restaurants, the term stuck. Now I would say it is trendy to call your restaurant a "grocery," as in City Grocery, which we are visiting on Monday. But Taylor Grocery was once a general store and is housed in its original building. It is a "dry" part of earth, so you have to brown bag it--that is, bring your own liquor. (Hence why we loaded up on booze beforehand.) But you can't bring the bottles inside. Oh, no. You mix your drinks and pour your wine in the parking lot. The alcohol rules and regulations are interesting in these here parts. You cannot buy cold beer in (actual) grocery stores or mini-marts--only warm beer--and beer is not sold in liquor stores (wine and hard liquor only). You can get cold beer in town, as beer is legal in the town of Oxford though illegal in the county of Lafayette. Yep. The county is dry in beer, but the city is not while you can get liquor and brown-bag it at least three restaurants.

Nuts, I say.
So many levels of irony in this photo of my wine at Taylor Grocery.

It was a wonderful meal, and if I could make a comparison between Taylor Grocery and any other restaurant, it would be Toad Suck Buck's, which is also in the woods and makes great use of plasticky tablecloths. Ah, but the best steaks are found there, just as great catfish was found here. The house salad with vidalia onion dressing lived up to its reputation (although I wouldn't have minded some onion in the salad itself). I liked the French fries with Rotel (which is actually cheese dip with Rotel), but it wasn't novel to me. The place, with its graffiti and corner musician singing Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, also reminded me of White Water Tavern. It was like coming home. :)

We topped the night off with a mini-tour of campus and played Puerto Rico, which was a fun game of producing coffee and indigo, even if I came in last.

(See the corkscrews on the wall? If you forget yours, you can always come in and borrow one!)

We had breakfast from Honest Abe's doughnuts and BBQ, which used to be a drive-thru liquor store. Classy, I say.
And the biggest bear claws I've ever seen!

These babies are the most precious jewels. :)
pearl onions = a delish dish
Onions are my favorite. And I could just pop these in my mouth whole and let them melt.
Bree and Ashley Taylor made boeuf bourguignon with garlic bread on Sunday. It truly takes all day to make, but it is not impossible. Kevin, Zach, and I went shopping for the ingredients; Melissa and I chopped and prepped ingredients. Those ladies know how to cook up a good meal. :)

We went to The Grove and played bocce and took in a concert.

Sunset in The Grove

And Zach and I explored Ventress Hall, the administrative offices for the College of Liberal Arts. It reminds me of Hogwarts.
This Tiffany Stained Glass commemorates the University Grays, a Confederate unit of Ole Miss students who had a 100% fatality rate. (The only survivor never returned to school, so he's not counted.)
There are hydrangeas EVERYWHERE! We found these in the kids bookstore, Square Books Jr. on Monday.

After lunch at Newk's, we finally made it to the famed City Grocery that night.

After a farewell breakfast with the Gates' at Bottletree Bakery on Tuesday, where I had this deliciously crispy chocolate croissant, Zach and I headed to Rowan Oak, William Faulkner's Oxford home. : )Once there, I proceeded to take too many out-of-focus photos because I did not want to be caught looking like a nerd who has to photograph EVERYTHING in William Faulkner's Oxford home. ; )I enjoyed listening to one visitor attempt to explain to an older couple, who had never read Faulkner (except for possibly a few short stories), who Quentin Compson was (including clarifying that he was not a real person who lived at Rowan Oak), why he is important, when he died (including the side note that the 100th anniversary of his death was on June 2), and how and why emos are drawn to him--and what an "emo" is. Our tour guide, who appeared younger than the visitor himself, just stood by quietly and smirked.

(I did, however, have to acknowledge and applaud how much of a nerd this visitor was because he asked the older couple to take a picture of him on the porch so he would have proof he had been there.)
The house was nice, but the grounds were gorgeous and fragrant. I wish I knew what those yellow and white flowers were off to the right of the house. I wanted to gallop across the grounds while wishing I had a real camera to take more professional pictures.

Zach and I at Rowan Oak

But I did take this one of Zach crossing the grounds. I think it has become one of my favorites! : )O

Flavor of the Park

Once again this photo-a-day album could be a food journal. :)O (I don't know what this smile is, but I like it.)

Tonight we went to Flavor of the Park at the Farmer's Market pavilion here in Hot Springs. It was A-MA-ZING! So many restaurants were there, from The Arlington to Bohemia to Culinary District. (My favorite was The Arlington--a delicious salad and crab cake!)

I did enjoy these wafflesque cookies (and salt water taffy) from Culinary District!

In this picture, you can see the pavilion; it was lined with tables for each restaurant, and there were two more behind me plus the drink headquarters. The man in the white jacket was one of the musicians from the mariachi band of a Mexican restaurant, Cotija. It was great listening to them play, including Guantanamera. Another fun surprise: all drinks were included in the price ($12) INCLUDING alcoholic beverages. And these were not just your average domestic beers either, but there was quite a few I hadn't heard of and some more pricey imports. I had Goose Island Honker's Ale and Kirin Ichiban, which I would have never bought on my own.

I just thought this was funny!

Definitely got our money's worth... :)O

UFO: Near the end of the night, one of the balloons at the festival escaped. Last night one escaped on the deck from Erin and Nathan's party, and Beverly told Zach to go get Bobby and tell him it was a UFO. ;)~

Flushed Away

Last night Zach and I FINALLY watched this. (We Netflixed it weeks ago...)

It was so funny and precious! Zach says it has the cutest singing slugs you will ever see. (Side note: Zach and I were discussing slugs, and he said that they were the same thing as snails. I didn't think so. He said they were like hermit crabs and found their shells. This seemed so plausible, I agreed that he was probably right then. WRONG. I googled it today, and I was thinking right--the snails secrete their shells over time, which is why they grow in a spiral from the inside out. ;)

I loved Flushed Away...but it made me miss England terribly.

The DVD came in handy this morning when I was babysitting Sayer, and the VCR wouldn't work. (There aren't many kid DVDs lying around here since the kids a.k.a. Erin and Zach grew up before the DVD-age.) So I popped this in, and the "little person," as my awkward husband calls him, sat riveted. I guess it does pay to be a "big kid," as Beverly said about Zach. Sayer's such a sweet, smart, and funny kid and minds so well--no trouble at all!

I had much more trouble corralling the animals. *lol*

Tonight Terry came over for swimming and supper and brought the most delicious and creamy and fluffy coconut meringue pies I've ever had. His mom made them from scratch. :) I really should have taken a picture of them. He left them for us to enjoy! HUZZAH!

Adriane and Brenna, we missed you guys tonight, but we hope to see you soon!!

Erin's 23rd Birthday = A Ruby Tuesday

June 1, 2010

Happy birthday, Erin! We love you!!

How is it already June? And how can I almost be finished with the first installment of my photo journal?! Time sure flies when you're having fun...

We ate here TWICE today. The first time was with Michelle for lunch (chicken tenders and a mojito--sorry if I got tipsy :).

This is Michelle at lunch with us at Ruby Tuesday back in January. I guess it's our place with her. *lol*

Then we had Erin's birthday dinner, and we only found out that morning--AFTER we had scheduled lunch there with Michelle after changing times on her TWICE--that she wanted to eat her birthday dinner there (the BEST salad bar EVER). Michelle, I'm so glad to know you take pictures of your food, too.

We love Ruby Tuesday, so it was fine in our book, but we will definitely take a break before going back!!

[I didn't take any pictures at lunch or dinner because everyone has been feeling kinda poorly lately.]
