Diamond Bear

August 21, 2010

Anatoliy joined us for a trip to Hot Springs, but we checked out Diamond Bear Brewing Company first!

After a sampling of three beers from among the Paradise Porter (my fave!), Presidential IPA, Two Term Double IPA, Southern Blonde Lager, Pale Ale, AND Root Beer (yummy!), we toured the tiny factory and got to check out the machines.

Then we winded our way to Spa City for dinner at Brau Haus and night swimming. Fun times! Thanks for coming! :)

Weekend Update: (Board) Games are NOT Boring

July 16-18, 2010

Swimming, the Brau Haus, and board games on Friday...who could ask for anything more?

Ticket to Ride was FUN! We should play it again, ok? Or Puerto Rico. But not Galactic Truckers.

Melissa surprised the Gates' with a visit from TX, and we were happy to see her again.

Also, thanks for the cider! It was most enjoyable in the unemployment pool. ;)

Zach has been hard at work on his new Lego Amsterdam-esque town.
He built this sweet pub, The Lion, on Saturday!
All day I was running between our living room and the bedroom to give him my opinion on its construction.

If we can't move to Europe, we'll move Europe here. :)

Sunday night was game night with the Hendrixes!
Our six-month reunion with Rob and Mechelle: they joined us for a fajita dinner with pico de gallo AND twos kinds of dip: cheese and Mechelle's yummy corn dip.

I also baked up some cookies using our stash of dark chocolate raspberry creme chips--DELISH! They were sooo good! I hope we can find some more of these chips because not many cookies are left for tomorrow. :)

[*lol* Zach and I also realized this is the first sit-down dinner with friends we've had since we got married. Our old apartment was very small. ;]

Erin and Josh joined us for a game of UNO. Geez, I hate losing. But I really do love that game! I have so much playing it, especially with our UNO buddies. I'm so glad you guys got to meet Hobie the Cat. We really should this more often than every six months. Aren't we silly?

[I forgot to take pictures during this game, so this is one of Mechelle attempting Rob to take the cards back out so we can recreate the scene. I finally got him to at least hold up the game. *tehe*]

Chocolate Love: Just 2 of My Favorites

June 16, 2010

I finally broke into my second and last candy bar from my birthday basket Zach gave me. :)
(I devoured the white chocolate one ages ago. Well, "devour" is not the appropriate word. I had enough restraint to eat tiny pieces here and there over a number of days--my plan with this one, too.)

This is so so so good.
One of my favorites. It's up there with the Milky Way (regular and Midnight), the Crunchie, and any white chocolate bar (including cookies and cream, although I could do without the cookies).
That reminds me that I STILL haven't tried Milky Way Simply Caramel. Unbelievable.

Anyway, Monica and I picked up our first Chocolove bars during my senior year at Whole Foods (formerly Wild Oats, which was a much better name if you ask me). I later bought the Ginger Crystallized in Dark Chocolate and kept it in my desk in Dr. Fowler's office for ages; for some reason, I was too scared to eat it. I fretted I wouldn't like it, and, as I felt the same way about the Green Tea Kit-Kat's Zach brought back from Japan on his China trip and was proven correct i.e. Green Tea Kit-Kat's = ICK, I think my caution was justified. Although I believe it has since expired, I still have that ginger chocolate bar. Nuts I am.

On that first trip, I think Monica got the Raspberries in Dark Chocolate and shared with Rose and Emily who LOVE raspberries and chocolate. My best friends in high school largely disliked chocolate, so I was blessed to find like-minded individuals at UCA. Score! :)

There are many reasons this is one of my favorites:
1) I LOVE dark chocolate.
2) I LOVE the orange peel. I once made rustic biscotti with orange zest and cornmeal, and those twice-baked biscuits were so so so good. I love the texture the peel adds to the chocolate. I tend to let it melt in my mouth until the peel is exposed, and then I savor the subtle orange flavor the zest provides.
3) I LOVE that this chocolate bar includes poetry! Hello, Food Heaven for English Majors! Zach and I would sell these puppies at our Literary Bakery. Monica and I collected our wrappers when we lived together and posted them on the refrigerator.

The poem in my birthday orange bar is by none other than Billy Shakes! I present you with SONNET 20:"A woman's face with nature's own hand painted,
Hast thou, the master mistress of my passion;
A woman's gentle heart, but not acquainted
With shifting glance as is false women's fashion; An eye more bright than theirs, less false in rolling,
Gilding the object whereupon it gazeth;
A man in hue all hues in his controlling,
Which steals men's eyes and women's souls amazeth.
And for a woman wert thou first created,
Till Nature as she wrought thee fell a-doting,
And by addition me of thee defeated,
By adding one thing to my purpose nothing.
But since she pricked thee out for women's pleasure,
Mine be thy love and thy love's use their treasure."

Granted, this appears to be from the "Fair Youth" group, but I'll take it! Now if only we can make it to Conway for the Shakespeare Theatre!

Dublin Mudslide is my FAV-O-RITE.
I mean, how can you not love "Irish Cream Liqueur Ice Cream with Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies and a Coffee Fudge Swirl?"
And it is the perfect (and, might I add, long-awaited) reward for reaching a very difficult goal--learning to swim! Now, I can't exactly swim very far, but I did swim some on my own, and Zach agreed with me I had earned the treat I was saving. *lol* :)

P.S. I just had to put this picture, although it is low quality. Some rat breeders decided to be clever and name their litter after Ben and Jerry's flavors. But how could no one want Dublin Mudslide?!

Flushed Away

Last night Zach and I FINALLY watched this. (We Netflixed it weeks ago...)

It was so funny and precious! Zach says it has the cutest singing slugs you will ever see. (Side note: Zach and I were discussing slugs, and he said that they were the same thing as snails. I didn't think so. He said they were like hermit crabs and found their shells. This seemed so plausible, I agreed that he was probably right then. WRONG. I googled it today, and I was thinking right--the snails secrete their shells over time, which is why they grow in a spiral from the inside out. ;)

I loved Flushed Away...but it made me miss England terribly.

The DVD came in handy this morning when I was babysitting Sayer, and the VCR wouldn't work. (There aren't many kid DVDs lying around here since the kids a.k.a. Erin and Zach grew up before the DVD-age.) So I popped this in, and the "little person," as my awkward husband calls him, sat riveted. I guess it does pay to be a "big kid," as Beverly said about Zach. Sayer's such a sweet, smart, and funny kid and minds so well--no trouble at all!

I had much more trouble corralling the animals. *lol*

Tonight Terry came over for swimming and supper and brought the most delicious and creamy and fluffy coconut meringue pies I've ever had. His mom made them from scratch. :) I really should have taken a picture of them. He left them for us to enjoy! HUZZAH!

Adriane and Brenna, we missed you guys tonight, but we hope to see you soon!!

Paula Deen's Cobbler

Tonight Dan came over to swim, and Beverly made fried catfish, fried potatoes, green beans, and hushpuppies. I made blackberry cobbler for dessert.

Nothing beats Paula Deen's recipe...even when you cut the sugar and butter down!

(I just wish I had remembered to put my leftover blackberries on top to make it pretty. ;)~
